Once upon a memory
you held me in the night.
Butterfly kisses
across sleepy eyes,
beneath the night's soft light.
Once upon a memory
my confidence unstable.
You encouraged me to try,
to walk, to climb,
to discover I was able.
Once upon a memory
I sat upon your knee.
You read me books,
and told me tales;
true stories and fantasy.
Once upon a memory
you taught me how to be,
kind and caring,
and there for others,
as God is there for me.
Once upon a memory
my days so filled with laughter.
You gave me reason to smile,
yesterday, tomorrow,
ever after.
Now upon a present time,
these memories I remember not.
The exact details of where and when
are things I've long forgot.
But the very fact they happened
has grown me into me.
Like the seeds below the soil
determining the trees that you see.
Not because I remember them,
those times when I was young.
But because, those seeds, you planted them,
each and every one.
And still you plant your seeds
as you go about your life;
as mum, as a friend,
as mama, as a wife.
And one day all our memories
will fade into the night.
But the impact that you had
will be an everlasting light.
